PENTOXYLON: Is a very
rare gymnosperm, so far only found in the southern hemisphere. It has
been named "five-wood”, because the stem is not made up of a single
wood body. Mostly it's made up by 5 or 6 wood bodies. The wood bodies
are embedded in bark. Every wood body has growth rings and therefore
was adding to the thickness of the stem. Probably Pentoxylon was a
development coming from Palaeozoic Medullosa and ending in the Jurassic
period.
For those still in feet and inches: 10MM = 1CM and there are 25MM to the inch.
Photographed wet and magnified in natural light to show detail.
